Supply deal worth $2.4 million for military experts

Arotech Corporation is to supply the US Army with over 1500 Soldier Wearable Integrated Power Equipment System, or SWIPES, from its battery and power systems division.

SWIPES integrates force protection electronics and communication equipment, with a zinc-air battery into an army issue load-carrying vest. The system uses a modular power distribution system powered by BA-8180/U, BA-8140/U zinc-air batteries or LI-145, BB2590 rechargeable batteries for providing direct power to equipment.

The high energy density means soldiers can work for longer in the field without recharging or swapping battery packs. This enables longer missions as well as reducing the pack weight by 30%. The batteries continuously charge the secondary batteries inside various devices, such as two-way radios, GPS units and shot detection systems. SWIPES can be adapted to individual’s needs, to allow soldiers to accept new applications when they become available.

"Reducing the load on a soldier and simplifying the supply logistics promoted SWIPES to be awarded the accolade of a Top-Ten Best Army Inventions in 2011," declared Arotech's Chairman and CEO, Robert Ehrlich. "This follow-on order from the US army is testament to the effectiveness of our product and reflects its increasing acceptance among US Ground Forces."

Himoinsa supplies four gensets to Gibraltar

Spanish genset OEM Himoinsa has supplied four gensets to the British overseas territory Gibraltar on the Iberian peninsular.

Himoinsa packaged four Mitsubishi engines - two 1000kVA and two 2000kVA – to generate power at a low voltage, 400V. The presence of two transformers enables the power to be stepped up to 11kV. The customer is Gibraltar Electricity Authority (Gibelec)

With an approximate population of 29,500 inhabitants, Gibraltar has a constantly increasing energy demand. The four gensets will cover both peak demand and to provide supply when other gensets experience faults or undergo maintenance checks.

Himoinsa’s two HTW-2030 gensets are housed in a 40ft container, while the HTW-1030 units are housed in 20ft containers. The gensets are controlled by means of the SCADA system, computer software that allows remote controlling and monitoring of industrial processes; all gensets feature InteliGen ComAp control units for utility paralleling.        

A 30ft container contains two 11kV/400V 3000kVA transformers, while fuel is housed within three aboveground 10,000 litre storage tanks.

Rolls-Royce wins $40m contract to power Turkmenistan-China natural gas pipeline

Rolls-Royce has bagged a $40m contract to supply equipment and related services to power the flow of natural gas through the Uzbekistan section of the Turkmenistan-China natural gas pipeline.

Rolls-Royce will supply Asia Trans Gas (ATG LLC), a joint venture between Uzbekistan's Uzbekneftegaz and China’s National Petroleum Corporation, with three RB211 gas turbine driven pipeline compressor units for operation at a compressor station on the 530km Uzbekistan section of the 1,830 km Turkmenistan-China natural gas pipeline.

The Uzbekistan section of the Turkmenistan-China natural gas pipeline will transport 25 billion cubic meters per year of gas from Turkmenistan, through Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, to China, helping to stabilise China’s consumption of natural gas.

Rolls-Royce will manufacture and package the equipment at its energy facilities in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and Mount Vernon, Ohio, USA.

AFC Energy ships fuel cell system to ICL

AFC Energy has delivered a fuel cell electricity generating system to Industrial Chemicals Limited (ICL), a leading UK commodity chemicals producer.

The shipment is in advance of a 1 MW commercial-scale project to install the world’s largest alkaline fuel cell energy generation system at ICL’s chlor-alkali plant in Essex, UK. The project is being supported with a European Union grant of €6.1m ($8m), from this April.

The first delivery was for a skid-mounted (mobile) Beta fuel cell system which is expected to be installed and to commence supplying small quantities of power to the chemicals works from April 2013. It will use waste hydrogen, produced as a by-product at the chemicals works, as fuel to generate clean energy. 

The system will test and qualify the hydrogen supply and site infrastructure ahead of the installation of the larger system in stages later this year.  By harnessing the waste hydrogen, AFC Energy’s fuel cell system will eventually provide up to 1 MW at point of consumption, reducing reliance on grid-supplied electricity by up to 20%. 

As part of the project AFC Energy is to provide electrical power to ICL under its first ESCO (Energy Supply Company) arrangement whereby ICL will provide its hydrogen and purchase power under long-term contracts. AFC Energy will own, operate and maintain the fuel cell systems.

MEMS Power Generation to keep power running at London Uni

A major London university contracted MEMS Power Generation to provide temporary power for the continuation of medical research and experiments during maintenance work.

MEMS supplied a total of 4100kVA to six buildings on the university site that house 20 years of experiments that cannot be affected by ongoing site maintenance.

Engineers installed two 800kVA generators, that will work in parallel redundancy, and 2600kg of cabling for total resilience. This was followed by two 1250kVA generators, which will work in parallel to power the site’s main building.

MEMS Power Generation, commented: “The University is renowned for carrying out a vast amount of medical research, so the temporary power we supplied needed to ensure that experiments and testing could carry on as normal during the maintenance period. If power had been lost, potentially 20 yeas of experiments could have been lost.

"Our aim was to ensure that the buildings never lost power for more than 15 minutes on installation of the temporary equipment and on reinstatement of the mains supply.”

Oz energy firm offer $10 000 in grants

Australia’s biggest energy retailer, Origin, is offering AUS$10 000 in grants to encourage customers to install energy saving devices. The programme is intended to raise awareness of where energy savings can be made at household and business level.

The programme, called Origin Local Savers, is open to households, businesses and community groups in Ballarat, Victoria, with five grants being given out in total.

"We hope that Origin Local Savers will help Ballarat residents become more aware of the simple things that can be done around the office, home or in the community," said Amy Stockfield, Origin Consumer Media and Partnerships Manager.

The grant money can be used to upgrade electrical appliances, install eco-friendly lamps or set up timer switches to reduce the use of standby power.

Himoinsa launches 500 kW Power Cube genset for European market

Spanish genset manufacturer Himoinsa has launched its 500kW power generator in a 10-foot container, named Power Cube, in Europe. 

Originally designed for and launched in the North American market, Himoinsa has adapted Power Cube for the European market. In a statement, the company said its size and shape is suitable for with projects with reduced space availability where 20 feet containers cannot be used.

The Power Cube has an electric fan which allows reduction of acoustic emissions and, therefore, the use of the unit in residential areas and events. It is often in these scenarios where high power is required, there is little space available, and low noise generation is required. In addition, self-sufficiency is ensured by rapid external fuel inlets.

The set is prepared to be synchronised and give extra power in ISO sizes of 20 feet for 1000 kW, 30 feet for 1500 kW, 40 feet for 2000 kW etc.

Deeya Energy targets $20bn Indian energy storage market

US-based flow battery developer Deeya Energy said it is targeting India’s $20billion energy storage market to reduce the country’s dependence on diesel.

Deeya Energy is developing ESP3, a 2.5kW, 10kWh redox flow battery for small-scale stationary energy storage applications. Ravi Sharma, Deeya’s new Global Director, said the “breakthrough (storage) technology” would help in replacing diesel gensets.

“India will be the launch pad for this technology. India is a key market for us. The whole of South Asia, Middle East and Africa will also be big markets for this technology,” said Sharma, the former CEO of Adani Power.

According to Press Trust India, Sharma said Deeya Energy, which has already set up a manufacturing facility in Gurgaon (a suburb of New Delhi), would soon start supplying the batteries to telecom and power entities.  “We have done the testing with telecom and tower companies. We have also done it with power companies such as Power Grid and some other railway signalling schemes. After doing some fine tuning, we found that they have approved our batteries to be used,” said Sharma.

Crestchic forms loadbank sales partnership with Russia’s Technical Solutions

Crestchic has formed a partnership with Technical Solutions to supply loadbanks to the growing Russian market.

Technical Solutions will exclusively supply Crestchic AC Resistive and Reactive (inductive) loadbanks, as well as DC and MV loadbanks, containerised transformers and associated control equipment, systems and software. Paul Brickman, sales and marketing manager at Crestchic, explained: “We worked with the team on various pilot projects last year that were extremely successful – around a dozen machines have been ordered in the last six months, which is phenomenal.

“As the Russian market continues to expand in the oil and gas, shipbuilding and power generation sectors, and particularly as we see the growth of data centres, it is crucial that we meet demand via a local point of contact. Formalising our relationship means that we can offer viable solutions delivered through a permanent local team to our existing and potential customers in Russia.” 

Alexander Rodikov, general director at Technical Solutions, added: “We have seen a marked increase in demand for loadbanks in the Russian market since starting work with Crestchic in late 2011. Being named as an official partner in Russia will give us the freedom to capitalise on what is a very exciting period of growth in the market.”

Centrax bags gas turbine genset deals in Italy, France

Centrax has begun 2013 by winning major orders for its gas turbine products from Italy and France.

In Italy, Centrax has sold a recently-launched CX400 powered by the 12.9MW Siemens SGT-400 gas turbine, to energy management company Fenice.  The CX400 will provide heat and power for the Huntsman Tioxide plant in Scarlino, 100km south of Florence, which produces titanium dioxide for use as a pigment in paint.

In France, contract energy management company Dalkia has ordered a Centrax CX501-KB7 package for a district heating plant near Cenon, Bordeaux. This 5 MW cogeneration unit replaces an older, competitor’s genset that has reached the end of its 12-year contract. 

An important customer benefit of the Centrax unit is its ability to use the existing boiler and much of the ductwork, significantly reducing installation costs.
