Two Chinese firms have joined forces in a bid to replace lead-acid batteries with their carbon-based aluminium technology.

Chinese firms Tantech Holdings Ltd. and Zhejiang EGE Battery Manufacturing Co have entered into a strategic cooperation agreement to develop, market, and sell carbon-based aluminium (Al) batteries.

China’s lithium-ion cell and battery manufacturers face stricter safety requirements after the introduction of government-sanctioned testing.

In a first of its kind move, all lithium-ion cells and batteries for mobile and portable electronic equipment applications will have to pass a series of tests before they can be sold.

Secondary lead smelters’ profit in China were hit by growing cost and falling secondary lead prices last week, reported Shanghai Metal Market.

The average cost of secondary lead was 12,710 yuan per tonne last year, down 25 yuan per tonne on the weekly basis.

China must reach lithium battery energy densities of 200wh/Kg and 300wh/Kg by the end of 2015 and 2020 respectively, the national research plan requires.

LG Chem has signed a deal to supply China’s largest SUV producer with 200,000 lithium-ion batteries for a range of electric vehicles.

The Korean firm signed the deal with great Wall Motor to supply batteries for the automaker’s new EV range, to be launched in 2017.

Shenzen-based Highpower International has been awarded a contract by state-owned China Southern Power Grid (CSPG) to deliver an ESS system to balance out the supply to the South China grid.

Highpower’s 100kWh ESS comes with LiFePO4 batteries and has a 500V, 200 Ah capacity with 60KW maximum output power.
