US-based Larson Electronics has added a mobile distribution system for industrial applications to its range of industrial grade lighting equipment.

The temporary distribution system is designed to utilise power power sources independently for maintenance and cleaning in hazardous work areas. The system operates with 240V 60Hz AC, which is then stepped down to 120V AC.

"These systems are ideal for indoor and outdoor use applications such as construction sites, plant maintenance, plant turnarounds, hazardous location operations, shows, exhibits, and shipyard operations," said Larson Electronics president Rob Bresnahan.

According to the Texas company, the power distribution system makes 120V AC available with eight 20A.

A 100A load centre protects the main load centre with a main breaker for circuit protection. Two run-flat tires and a cart style-mounting platform are aimed to provide easier substation mobility.

The transformer and distribution assembly is mounted to a standard upright steel dolly cart style frame

The distribution solution can be modified to meet the needs of job-site requirements. “As a manufacturer, we can custom build portable transformer systems to customer specifications,” added Bresnahan.

Temporary power provider APR Energy has secured a deal with Australian state-owned utility Horizon Power for a peaking power plant in Port Hedland, Western Australia.

The plant will feature four of APR Energy’s dual-fuel mobile gas turbines, producing 30MW of power each. The plant is set to run as a bridging solution for at least 30 months until Australia’s electricity power generator and marketer TransAlta Energy has built a permanent power plant, scheduled for 2017.

The peaking plant will be designed for the extreme conditions in Western Australia, where temperatures can reach 48°C in the summer. The contract provides an option of the additional installation of two aero-derivative turbines, if capacity requirements grow.

APR Energy has now a generation capacity of 410MW in the Asia Pacific region. "With this contract, we once again see turbines as the most, if not only, viable technology for utility customers needing large-scale, rapidly-deployed solutions that provide greater grid stability, low capital costs and low emissions,” said APR Energy’s managing director of Asia Pacific, Clive Turton.

The contract replaces APR Energy's earlier agreement with Forge Group Power Party Limited, which declared bankruptcy.

Horizon Power serves more than 10,000 businesses and large industrial customers as well as more than 100,000 residents, across a range of 2.3m sq. kilometres in Western Australia.

Aggreko has been selected to provide temporary power to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The deal will see the Scottish power provider supplying temporary power for the broadcasting of all the matches in 12 host cities across Brazil.

In addition, Aggreko will provide power and temperature control services for the International Broadcast Centre in Rio de Janeiro.

Aggreko has a strong presence in South America; having bought Brazil’s largest power rental business— PoitEnergia— in 2012 it is well positioned to provide the necessary power for the championship.

The media coverage of the 64 matches will be watched by three billion people around the world and require Aggreko to supply, install and operate more than 46MW of generating capacity, 1,000 distribution panels and 200 km of electric cables.

Aggreko has entered a four-year deal with Cirque de Soleil to provide power and temperature control for the show on tour.

Cirque de Soleil has five touring shows that travel across the USA, Canada, Central and South America, Europe and Asia. Aggreko will need to provide machinery that can operate in the extreme weathers presented on all continents.

The power for each show must be uninterruptible and independent from the local electricity grid. Aggreko has provided power to many entertainment events worldwide including the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Energetix subsidiary Energetix Pnu Power has received a UK patent for an important method relating to the core technology within its compressed air uninterruptible power supply products.

The patent - titled 'Lubrication of Positive Displacement Expanders' - describes the method by which efficiency of the conversion of compressed air into electrical power can be optimised with minimal lubrication of mechanical components. Pnu Power produces back-up power solutions, using compressed air, for utility switching, telecommunications, data centres and other mission critical industrial operations.

Energetix says the grant of this patent provides additional protection to the company's core product platform and builds on the company's intellectual property portfolio relating to its Pnu Power technology.

The company has a core patent granted in 20 countries which protects its compressed air driven UPS system as well as two further patents providing additional protection.

Chinese portable power company Powerocks has an ever growing range of mobile phone power boosting accessories. The high capacity portable batteries provide additional power for mobile and tablet devices that are compatible with USB ports.

The lithium-ion batteries can be charged form a mains power supply and then provide several re-charges for smart phones and tablet devices. The slim-line design of iPhones and the like mean the battery cannot be swapped with a spare, it must be recharged, resulting in companies coming up with novel ways to help users re-charge when travelling or away from mains charging.

The range includes the Stone series of portable batteries that offer between 5800mAh and 7800mAh capacity, which provide an additional three times power for devices; The Magicstick is the size of an AA cell and offers 2600mAH power on the go for phone devices.

The MagicstickThe ultimate in portable battery is built into the phone cover. The interestingly named Cheese Crystal is a protective case for the iPhone4 that has an 1800mAH lithium-ion battery incorporated in it to double potential battery life.

When charged, Powerocks range can power up to two devices, dependant on model, two or three times. The designs are complimentary to Apple style and show these chargers can be sleek and elegant but still pack a lot of power.

Smart heating system could cut bills and increase use of renewables

An energy efficient heating system offering efficiency savings of up to 20% could be key in the transition to low-carbon energy systems in Europe. This is according to a report commissioned by SSE (UK energy generators and distributors) and Dimplex (a global heating solutions firm).

The smart electric thermal storage (SETS) system works by storing up renewably produced energy when production is high but demand is low. The report indicated SETS could provide up to 54GW of additional flexible storage capacity across Europe by 2050, enabling renewable electricity to be stored when demand is low and used to heat homes when needed.

The system, first brought to the market by SEE and Dimplex in a product called Quantum, is intended to replace out-dated night storage heaters with something more efficient and with better room temperature control as well as being designed for smart grid integration.

The report found that if all 27 EU countries replaced storage heaters with SETS, savings of 7.4TWh of electricity and three mega-tons of CO2 could be made each year. If used in all electrically heated homes as much as 148GW could be provided by 2050.

Stuart Mackenzie, Managing Director of Dimplex, added: “Quantum offers consumers with electric storage heaters the opportunity to reduce their running costs by up to 27%. It’s also a Green Deal approved measure, so the capital cost outlay can be substantially reduced.”
