Revenues from grid-scale storage to reach $68 billion by 2024

The worldwide distributed energy storage market could be worth $68 billion from 2014 to 2024, according to a report by Navigant Research.

The report, “Energy Storage for the Grid and Ancillary Services” analyses the global market for grid-scale storage, with a focus on bulk and ancillary service applications.

US-based Larson Electronics has added a mobile distribution system for industrial applications to its range of industrial grade lighting equipment.

The temporary distribution system is designed to utilise power power sources independently for maintenance and cleaning in hazardous work areas. The system operates with 240V 60Hz AC, which is then stepped down to 120V AC.

"These systems are ideal for indoor and outdoor use applications such as construction sites, plant maintenance, plant turnarounds, hazardous location operations, shows, exhibits, and shipyard operations," said Larson Electronics president Rob Bresnahan.

According to the Texas company, the power distribution system makes 120V AC available with eight 20A.

A 100A load centre protects the main load centre with a main breaker for circuit protection. Two run-flat tires and a cart style-mounting platform are aimed to provide easier substation mobility.

The distribution solution can be modified to meet the needs of job-site requirements. “As a manufacturer, we can custom build portable transformer systems to customer specifications,” added Bresnahan.

Clarke Energy to supply five GE diesel engines to Nigeria

UK-based power provider Clarke Energy is to deliver five diesel engines to Nigerian company Lagos’ Flour Mills.

The diesel engines are designed to deliver up to 12.5MW of electrical power. The delivery is aimed to help the country’s energy distribution challenges and encourage the growing industrial sector.

Two of the engines will be used at the Kano facility in northern Nigeria, in order to maintain power for production. The General Electric engines will deliver 5 MW of baseload electrical power, with an expected capital payback in less than 12 months on diesel fuel cost savings. The other three engines will be installed at Flour Mills' headquarters in Lagos that already uses 11 of GE’s J620 gas engines. The diesel engines are aimed to provide backup power.

“As Nigeria continues to grow its industrial might in the global economy, we have opted to invest in General Electric’s new 616 diesel engines to deliver higher fuel efficiency at our sites in Lagos and Kano,” said Paul Gbededo, chief executive officer, Flour Mills of Nigeria.

“Our new 616 diesel engine is the first high-speed model for power generation, allowing us to serve customers with a wider reciprocating engine portfolio,” said Cory Nelson, general manager diesel engines of General Electric’s distributed power business.

Aggreko powers 2014 Ryder Cup

Power supplier Aggreko is to provide 17MW of temporary power to the 2014 Ryder Cup in Scotland.

The contract includes technical power supply to broadcasters, backup support on location at Gleneagles and air conditioning for on site facilities. Around 40 different temporary structures will need to be powered and cooled.

Aggreko plans to perform its uninterruptible TwinPack generators at the golf event. The generators work together in one container and are designed to minimise sound emissions from power production.

Around 600 distribution boards will be utilised to connect and feed power supplies around the golf course.

"Aggreko has vast experience of providing temporary power and temperature control solutions at golf tournaments. Doing so at the 2014 Ryder Cup, which is on our doorstep and is perhaps higher profile than any previous tournament is a great privilege,” said Angus Cockburn, interim chief executive officer of Aggreko, who stepped into the role after Rupert Soames left to join outsourcing business Serco.

The Ryder Cup is only one of Aggreko’s major event assignments in the past. The company provided power for five FIFA World Cups, nine Olympic and Paralympic Games as well as for four previous Ryder Cups in Europe.

The 2014 Ryder Cup will take place on 23-28 September.

FuelCell Energy receives US DOE grant for distributed hydrogen production

US Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded FuelCell Energy with a $900,000 grant to produce a system of distributed hydrogen production.

FuelCell will develop an electrochemical reactor using the company’s commercial carbonate fuel cell stacks to produce a distributed hydrogen generation method. The new system shall allow hydrogen to be generated more efficiently where it is needed rather than on a large scale at a central plant. According to the company, distributed hydrogen generation would reduce transportation costs and provide reliable fuel supply.

The grant is part of a $20m support to advance hydrogen production and delivery technologies.

"Developing technologies that can economically produce and deliver hydrogen to power fuel cells from diverse, domestic and renewable resources can enable substantial reductions in energy use and carbon emissions," federal energy officials said.

“This award from the U.S. Department of Energy will get the R&D started on this concept, which could be an attractive approach to generate hydrogen in a low or carbon-neutral manner," said Anthony Leo, vice president of FuelCell. Using direct fuel stacks makes the stationary fuel cell power plant versatile, claimed Leo.

The manufacturer recently completed an installation of a 14.9MW fuel cell park in Bridgeport, US, owned by Dominion Corporate.

ClearEdge fuel cell powers one million hours

Fuel cell manufacturer ClearEdge Power is celebrating the millionth operational hour of its PureCell Model 400 fleet in the field.

The PureCell Model 400 system provides up to 400 kW of assured electrical power, plus 1.5 million Btu/hour of heat for combined heat and power applications.

The on-site power generating system adheres to the strictest air emissions requirements, is highly energy efficient and virtually pollution-free, no fossil fuel is combusted in the production of power.

An estimated 660 000 barrels of oil has been saved by the use of the PureCell for distributed energy generation.
