Two Chinese firms have joined forces in a bid to replace lead-acid batteries with their carbon-based aluminium technology.

Chinese firms Tantech Holdings Ltd. and Zhejiang EGE Battery Manufacturing Co have entered into a strategic cooperation agreement to develop, market, and sell carbon-based aluminium (Al) batteries.

Johnson Controls has confirmed plans to build a new stop-start lead-acid battery manufacturing facility in northeastern China

The US company has signed an investment agreement for a $200 million state-of-the-art plant in the Tiexi District of Shenyang, the capital city of Liaoning Province.

Lead-acid battery manufacturer Enersys has partnered with a lift truck manufacturer to complete a UK deal.

The Swiss firm is supplying its Hawker® Motive Power branded batteries, which will be used alongside Crown’s wireless fleet management solution.

US battery manufacturer Johnson Controls is set to increase its existing lead-acid battery capacity in its Toledo, Ohio plant.

When the Toledo plant expansion finishes in 2016, it will expand the production of Absorbent Glass Mat (AGM) advanced batteries for Start-Stop vehicle applications.

It will come as no surprise to the industry that lead-acid has topped the most recycled list again in 2013, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) latest report.

It topped the chart once again as the weight of lead being recovered stayed constant the percentage of the amount being recycled rose my 3%.

Early-stage lead-acid focused startup Gridtential has been selected by the Department of Energy (DOE) to pursue validation testing at Sandia’s Energy Storage Analysis Laboratory.

The US firm has developed a proprietary technology that replaces the metal grid in current lead-acid battery designs with a silicon substrate.

US utilities firm Duke Energy Renewables is upgrading the nation’s biggest utility scale lead-acid battery to provide Texas with fast response frequency regulation.

The company is converting its 36-megawatt storage battery at its Notrees Wind Power project in Texas to lithium-ion technology.

Fiji has stepped into the lead-acid industry with the launch of Pacific Batteries Ltd’s first Valve Regulated Lead Acid Batteries (VRLA) made on its shores.

The company, which makes 12V and 6V batteries for the automotive, marine and deep cycle applications, has invested $500,000 on the new product.
