Spanish OEM Himoinsa has provided diesel generators and lighting towers to a coal mine operated by Erdenes in the Gobi desert in Mongolia.

The three-phase gensets run on a stand-by application and feature a pre-heater system to ensure a promptly start at temperatures from -40°C in the winter as well as to over 35°C in the summer.

According to Himoinsa, the gensets deliver the rated power within 10s after utility failure and have an epoxy polyester powder finish to prevent corrosion.

The 9-metre high transportable lighting towers are aimed to run every night during the summer and 24/7 during the winter. “These lighting towers can operate for up to 70 hours non-stop, more than 7 nights without refueling," said Manuel Sánchez Bada, engineering manager at Himoinsa.

The equipment will operate at Erdenes’ coa lmine in the Ömnögovi province, which has 6.4 billion tonnes of coal and is divided into six sections. Five lighting towers and one genset from Himoinsaare currently  in operation at the extraction site.

The Spain-headquartered company recently supplied 25 diesel gensets and lighting towers to a BIOCOM-managed biofuel production plant in Cacuso, Angola.

US backup power provider Ancona Control has selected power-generation and distribution equipment firm Hipower Systems’ generator to ensure uninterruptible power supply (UPS) and backup power for a Michigan-based cable and Internet provider.

Hipower, a Himoinsa Power Systems subsidiary, supplied a 60Hz frequency diesel backup generator to provide power continuity. The company mounted the generator on a 1000-gallon sub-base tank providing more than 60 hours of runtime.

The fuel tank, approved by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, was customised for the harsh conditions and specific codes of Michigan state, with winterisation equipment, external fills, vents and alarms. The generator is part of a complete continuous-power package including DC power through a UPS made by Toshiba.

“In the Midwest, strong storms and power outages are a fact of life nearly year round, and the extreme cold in winter presents a further challenge,” said Hipower systems president Rafael Acosta.

Michigan-based Ancona Controls provides sales and 24/7 service of UPS systems, diesel, natural gas generators and DC power systems for businesses requiring uninterrupted power.

Diesel generators from Spanish manufacturer Himoinsa are to power the construction of four new offshore oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.

The platforms are located at over 120 metres wáter depth in the Ayatsil-Tekel field, around 120 km northwest of the Mexican city of Ciudad del Carmen.

Himoinsa’s 25kVA and 375kVA generators will be used by specialist engineering contractor The Nautic Group in skirt pile grouting each eight-legged platform. Nautic’s silo system will store and continuously supply grout at a pumping rate of up to 25 tonnes per hour.  

Mexico’s December 2013 energy sector reform law has generated a surge in oil sector investment from prívate companies, and major projects are in the pipeline.

Himoinsa supplied over 150 diesel generator sets for oil extraction in Mexican fields in 2013, the company said.  In recent months it has seen a surge in requests from companies operating on remote, isolated offshore platforms that are not grid-connected.

“The diesel generator rental market in this country is very volatile but we are taking part in important negotiations and will be involved in major projects for which we will be putting our faith in Himoinsa generator sets," said Hiram Ojeda, general manager of Himoinsa’s Mexican partner, equipment rental firm Red-D-Arc.  

Indian generator manufacturer Mahindra Powerol has launched the Leaf DG– a diesel generator shaped as its name suggests, like a leaf.

The design of the genset is intended to make it stand out. It has a curved top to represent a leaf and comes in a range of bright colours to break away from typical black box designs.

The Leaf comes in power ranges of 7.5 kVA, 10 kVA and 15 kVA and claims to improve ease of user experience as well as putting aesthetics high on the agenda.

The new generator, in addition to easier use and better performance, is in line with the taste and expectations of today's smart and evolving customer."

Mahindra Powerol hopes the design-led move will encourage users to display generators in pride of place instead of hiding them.
