US-based Emerson Network Power has announced the addition of five new capacities to its Liebert eXM UPS range with VRLA batteries.

With the addition of 120, 140, 160, 180 and 200 kVA models the line now counts 13 different units ranging from 10-200 kVA.

The three-phase, on-line, double conversion UPS systems intended for IT environments with medium-sized power requirements are U.S. ENERGYSTAR qualified and available throughout the Americas.

The line was also complimented by a new optimised transformer cabinet supporting dual input configurations for the existing 10 -100 kVA models.

French industrial group Socomec has launched a new line of UPS systems for server rooms, the service sector, healthcare, light industrial applications and infrastructure.

Ranging from 10-20 kVA, the ITYS Pro line comes in three different configurations: without batteries (Type S), with batteries (Type T), and with batteries or isolation transformer (Type M).

While Socomec has not said anything about the battery type in these systems, the company’s previous ITYS UPS systems (1-10 kVA) are equipped with maintenance free, sealed lead-acid batteries.

The range also comes with a battery cabinet offering flexible backup-times without increasing the footprint.

Up to four units can be configurated in parallel using Ethernet cables to enable power scalability or N+1 redundancy.

British and Indian researchers are working together to combine solar power with bio-mass and hydrogen to create a Bio-CPV uninterruptible power supply.

British and Indian researchers are working together, in the hope that a low-cost combination of solar power with bio-mass and hydrogen will create a Bio-CPV uninterruptible power supply.

The project is expected to generate power tt about 45 households in a remote village in West Bengal by 2016. It has been jointly funded by Research Councils UK and India’s department of science and technology.

"Descentralised hybrid power plants with different renewable technologies can be the most efficient, cheap and sustainable options for rural electrification,” said UK project leader Professor Tapas Mallick in the research paper related to the project.

The biomass and hydrogen will be produced locally.

The research, which began in 2012, is being conducted by scientists from British universities in Sheffield, Exeter and Nottingham, and the Indian institutions Visva-Bharati, IIT Madras and IIT Bombay.

Toshiba has announced the launch of a new line of 500 and 750 kVA UPS systems using silicon carbide (SiC) power modules.

Designed for data centres, the SiC power modules allow the three-phase UPS systems to be 98% efficient with a 50% load.

The footprint of the new UPS line is 17% smaller than its predecessor the G9000 where the 500kVA model measures 1800 x 832 x 2050 mm and weighs 1525 kg, while the 750kVA model is 2300 x 832 x 2050 mm and weighs 1928 kg.

The new UPS is also up to 57% smaller than competing models, the company claims.
