Dutch critical power supplier DBR is to deliver a gas genset to GDF Suez E&P Nederland’s offshore gas platform E17a-A located in the North Sea.

The 275kVA genset comprises of a gas powered MAN engine and a Leroy Somer air-to-air cooled generator. The system is designed to operate for 1,200 hours between maintenance intervals, according to DBR.

Due to limited space on the manned gas platform, DBR customised the genset design. “By placing the air cooling unit outside the engine room and reducing heavy components to a minimum we have come up with an efficient design that meets our client’s requirements,” said DBR sales manager Henri Hafkamp. The genset uses a single instead of a double frame and is manufactured with robust components to decrease risks of vibration.

The delivery is set for the end of 2014.

DBR recently struck a deal to supply emergency/harbour diesel gensets for six new pipelaying vessels from IHC Merwede.

GDF Suez E&P Nederland has 34 gas producing platforms and an annual gas production of 6 billion Nm3.

MTU Onsite Energy (MTU) has received certification for its series 4000 gas gensets to be compliant with Germany's medium-voltage directive.

The certification issued by Germany’s Federal Association of the Energy and Water Industry enables the gas generators to feed generated power into the public grid.

The series 4000 has a power output from 750kW to 2,600kW. According to MTU, the gensets achieve up to 44.3% electrical efficiency.

“Being armed with this certificate puts us in a very strong position on the market for gas gensets,” said Jörg Mielke, head of sales in Germany at MTU. MTU modified the gensets to meet the certification requirements.

Germany’s Renewable Energy Act and the Combined Heat and Power Act has led to an explosion in distributed power generation. MTU aims to provide static and dynamic grid support with the supply of reactive power or automatic reduction output as well as with its combined heat and power and biogas plants.

GE’s Distributed Power business is to supply 85 MW of on-site power for floating oil and gas production in Brazil.

Four LM2500+G4 aeroderivative gas turbine generators will be shipped to Tokyo-headquartered general contractor Modec, which specialises in the engineering, procurement, construction and installation of floating production systems.

The generators will be installed on Modec’s floating oil and gas production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel the Cidade de Caraguatatuba, which will operate in 2240 metres of water in the pre-salt fields off Brazil’s coast.

The generators are planned to power the vessel’s production processes, water reinjection, gas compression and process heating. Non-commercial grade ‘field gas’, produced on-site, will fuel the units, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, according to GE.

Shipment of the units is planned for late 2014 and installation for 2015, with commercial operation to commence in 2016 or 2017, GE said.

The agreement represents the two companies’ latest vessel set order, following previous orders for projects in Brazil and Africa. In June 2013 GE announced it would supply an earlier group of four LM2500+G4 aeroderivative units for an FPSO platform in Brazil's pre-salt field.

"This latest order for our aeroderivative gas turbines reaffirms GE's leadership in supporting the diverse on-site power needs of Brazil's offshore industrial sector as it develops the country's energy resources," said Lorraine Bolsinger, president and CEO of GE’s Distributed Power business.

UK-based fuel storage tank manufacturer Fuel Proof is launching a range of double-skinned fuel storage units for generator sets.

The GT (generator tank) units will be suitable for use with diesel and gas oil and are approved by the UN for transporting fuel on a highway.

The capacity of the generator tanks ranges from the GT1000 litre to the GT3000 litre and are built to be user friendly for durable use.

The generator tank units will be sold throughout mainland Europe by distributor EuroGate International, who Fuel Proof has had a partnership with for 12 months.

The range, which is manufactured using robot welders, will be constructed from steel and fully galvanised. The tanks can be lifted and moved using either the corner lifting eyes or integral forklift pockets, and they are stackable for efficient storage and transportation.
