Trading firm Marubeni has secured the exclusive distribution rights to EnerG2’s carbon materials for energy storage devices in Asia.

EnerG2’s carbon materials are used for rechargeable lead-acid batteries, electric double layer capacitors (EDLCs or ultracapacitors) and lithium-ion batteries. A developed carbon technology platform enables the company to design and manufacture customised carbon and silicon-carbon nano-composite materials.

South Korea's LG Chem and Siemens have agreed to collaborate more closely on development and marketing of industrial battery energy storage systems (ESS).

The two companies signed a preliminary deal at Siemens' German headquarters in Erlangen, Bayern to cooperate on several major ESS projects over the next few years.

German BASF and US energy storage start-up EnerG2 have partnered for the scale-up of carbon materials for supercapacitors and lead-acid batteries.

EnerG2 has developed a carbon technology platform that enables large-scale production of carbon materials. Seattle-based EnerG2’s patented carbon material is designed for supercapacitor electrodes and as a performance additive in start-stop lead-acid batteries in automotive and industrial applications. The two companies will jointly further develop the materials, expand capacity and extend global presence with a focus on Asia and Europe.

Shanghai-born Xu has an in-depth knowledge of Chinese market requirements, according to Bitrode.

US sodium battery manufacturer Aquion Energy (Aquion) has received $36.8m in a series E venture finance round.

The Pennsylvania-based maker of sodium batteries for grid storage will use the investment to support customer-facing resources, scale-up production and expand the manufacturing facility.

The global residential solar PV energy storage market will rise tenfold to 900MW by 2018, according to a study by analysis firm IHS.

The growth will be driven by the increasing attractiveness of PV for self-consumption as well as by subsidies and increasing interest from homeowners in becoming more independent of the electricity grid, the study 'Energy Storage in PV Report – 2014' reports.

Canadian Solar to provide 4MW energy storage for Ontario grid

Solar company Canadian Solar Solutions (Canadian Solar) is to supply 4MW of lithium-ion energy storage to support the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) grid in Ontario, Canada.

The energy storage system is aimed to provide 2.76MWh reactive power, voltage support and bulk energy storage services to the IESO using stationary lithium battery technology. The Canadian solar specialist is contracted for maintenance and operation services for 36 months.

Southern California Edison (SCE) has selected five energy storage companies to provide 261MW of grid-connected storage by 2021.

STEM will provide 85MW of behind-the-meter-storage, 50MW from Advanced Microgrid Solutions of battery-based "hybrid electric building" projects; Ice Energy 25.6MW of thermal energy storage; while NRG Energy will develop a 0.5MW grid-tied battery energy storage system.

Samsung SDI is to form a joint venture (JV) for energy storage systems with inverter manufacturer Sungrow in China.

The JV will develop lithium-ion battery energy storage, as well as marketing and sales of its storage solutions and products. The South Korean and Chinese companies plan to establish new firm in the first half of 2015.
