Poor profitability has led LG Chem is to sell off its secondary battery separator production facilities in Ochang, South Korea.

The company will dispose of its facilities in the plant, according to a BusinessKorea report.

Automobile OEM Nissan is looking for a new manufacturer for its electric vehicle lithium-ion batteries rather than build its own, its CEO Carlos Ghosn told the Wall Street Journal.

Nissan is likely to use LG Chem batteries, Ghosn told the US newspaper.

According to a new “Leaderboard report” from Navigant Research, LG Chem and Samsung SDI lead the Li-ion grid storage market in terms of strategy and execution.

"LG Chem and Samsung SDI, both based in South Korea, have market-leading businesses for the electric vehicle and consumer electronics markets, which has created a foundation allowing for economies of scale through manufacturing," says Anissa Dehamna, principle research analyst with Navigant Research. "Both companies have positioned themselves as global manufacturers and can offer consistently low prices for quality Li-ion cells."

The storage project will help regulate electric grid frequency for PJM, the transmission organisation that powers the eastern side of the U.S.

LG Chem has signed a deal to supply China’s largest SUV producer with 200,000 lithium-ion batteries for a range of electric vehicles.

The Korean firm signed the deal with great Wall Motor to supply batteries for the automaker’s new EV range, to be launched in 2017.

Korean firm LG Chem’s lithium-ion batteries will be combined with software from U.S. start-up Growing Energy Labs Inca and invertors by Ideal Power in electrical equipment disitributor Gexpro’s BESS.
