Polypore legals put a brake on LG

Polypore has won an injunction against LG Chem preventing the Korean company from producing batteries containing its own version of ceramic coated separators.

Polypore’s subsidiary Celgard claims that LG Chem is infringing Celgard’s patent on ceramic-coated lithium-ion separators. The company has requested a preliminary injunction to prohibit the importation or sale of lithium-ion batteries in the US that contain LG Chem’s lithium-ion separators.

LG Chem is to build a factory for the production of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, China.

Officials from the South Korean battery maker and Nanjing signed an agreement in Seoul, ahead of Chinese President Xi Jinping’s state visit to Korea.

LG Chem to extend car battery capacity

South Korean car battery manufacturer LG Chem is planning to expand its battery production after experts said the demand of electric vehicles (EV) will start to gain market traction in 2016.

The company should come to a final decision in three to four months. “We are seriously considering investing in expanding our EV battery production”, said LG Chem president and head of its battery unit, Kwon Yong-soo. There are no further details regarding how much the manufacturer wants to increase the production or where the expansion will take place.
