North American power equipment manufacturer Hipower Systems’ diesel generators will be used to provide back up power to this year’s Pan Am games.

The company, a division of Himoinsa, has delivered sixof its 1.2 MW portable diesel generators to Canadian rental company GAL Power.

The rental generators required a number of customisations, including easy access to the fuel tank and the control panel, and the ability to easily synchronise two or more units in parallel.

Hipower also reduced the length of the container-based systems by 25% from 40 to 30 feet, in spite of the fuel tank being mounted at the front of the container.

North American fuel cell manufacturer Plug Power is set to debut its hydrogen dispensing system in the Canadian market.

It follows an expansion of a contract to deliver another 124 of its GenDrive fuel cells to Walmart Canada’s distribution centre in Alberta, Canada.

The latest delivery means the site now hosts over 230 fuel cell units since taking its first delivery in 2010.

The contract also includes the installation of one of Plug Power’s GenFuel systems, a full-service hydrogen dispensing system which includes a hydrogen molecule supply, infrastructure such as pipes and cabinets and fuel dispensers.

Plug Power GenDrive fuel cells, intended for trucks and forklifts, come in 24, 36 and 48 V capacities and are designed to be drop-in replacements to batteries.

The company, which recently completed a marketing tour across North America, also landed large retail contracts last month.

Canadian battery manufacturer Electrovaya has delivered its lithium-ion battery technology at Glencore’s Raglan Mine in Quebec.

The lithium-ion battery technology solutions manufacturer has added the battery component to diesel generators in the $700,000 deal.

The 2.0 battery system technology has been installed at the mine in partnership with Tuqliq Energy Corp. and Hatch Ltd. who are engineering coordinators for the project.

When paired with a diesel generator the 2.0 system allows it to operate at maximum efficiency, reducing diesel consumption and lowering maintenance costs.

The 2.0 lithium-ion battery does not rely on specific components, instead, its innovation is independent of the cathode, anode and separator component selection which gave the product the ‘platform technology’ moniker.

The battery technology has been designed for use in remote mining operations, which have no grid connections and rely upon alternative energy sources.

The company says that its battery technology can store generated energy at an efficiency of greater than 90% to further improve energy efficiencies.
