Emerson Network Power has launched a new UPS system aimed at midsized and large data centres. 

The Liebert® NXLis a 400kVA, 575-600V on-line system, and is available both as a single module and multi-module system. When operating in double conversion mode the system is said to deliver energy efficiency at 93.9%, and in “Active Inverter Eco-Mode” the efficiency is up to 97.6%.

The UPS battery cabinets are equipped with factory-integrated Alber battery monitoring.

US energy storage company LiiON has launched a power-on-demand energy storage system for UPS systems, powered by lithium ion phosphate chemistry.

The LiiON- MEGAWATT UPS is capable of one minute or five – 15 minute runtimes, with a nominal voltage at 512V, and a capacity of 40Ahr.  The UPS is also fitted with LiiON’s management and monitoring system.

The company claims this system is the industry’s first to be listed by UL, an independent safety company.

Cummins Onan has launched a new 5.5 kW generator set to run on compressed natural gas.

The Series 5500 NG generator produces 5.5kW at 60Hz, 120/140 volts single phase and provide instant power, alternatively it can double as both a generator and a vehicle fuel tank.

The unit is also fitted with a muffler and exhaust catalysts to meet environmental standards set by the US Environmental Protection Agency.

Ballard to install fuel cell backup power in Jamaica

Canada’s Ballard Power Systems is to deploy 13 fuel cell power systems to the Digicel Group network in Jamaica.

The ElectraGen-ME fuel cell backup power system is powered by methanol and is designed to provide extended runtime backup power. A fuel reformer converts a methanol-water liquid fuel mixture into hydrogen gas to power each fuel cell stack.

This is the second order the Vancouver-based company received from the Digicel Group, which will bring the total systems deployed at critical sites around the island of Jamaica to 25. 161 ElectraGen-ME systems are installed across the entire Caribbean region.

Most of the systems will be located at rooftop base station locations.

“There are inherent challenges with incumbent backup power technologies on rooftops. Our methanol-fuelled systems offer a practical solution to address those challenges and deliver meaningful value to telecom operators globally,” said Larry Stapleton, Ballard Power Systems vice president of sales.

Due to extreme weather conditions in the region, telecom networks are vulnerable to frequent grid outages, which have an impact on continuity of service to subscribers

Communications provider Digicel Group has over 14m customers across its 32 markets in the Caribbean, Central America and Asia Pacific regions.

Cummins Power Generation has launched three Tier 4 Final certified mobile generator sets for the rental market.

The C150D2RE, C200D2RE, and C275D2RE units have a power output from 150kW to 275kW. The engines feature a combination of in-cylinder engine improvements, exhaust gas recirculation, selective catalytic reduction exhaust after treatment and diesel oxidation catalyst. 

According to the company, the generators enable switchable 60/50Hz dual frequency operation with multiple voltage configurations of 208V, 240V and 480V in three-phase and 240V in single-phase. 

The certified Cummins Power Generation’s QSB7 and QSL9 engine platforms form the basis for the three mobile sets.

The gensets are equipped with the PowerCommand 3.3 controller with paralleling and advanced load demand capabilities. The controller is able to manage power from paralleled generators to match varying load patterns, which offers additional flexibility and fuel savings for end-users.

“These new products are the result of extensive design research, customer interviews and real-world field testing to make sure we delivered Tier 4 Final certified products,” said Antonio Leitao, vice president of power products at Cummins Power Generation.

Tier 4 Final standards require a reduction to near-zero levels. US EPA adopted Tier 4 emission standards in 2004 for new off-road diesel engines.

California Governor Brown signs demand response bill

California’s Governor Jerry Brown has passed a demand response (DR) legislation that accelerates the use of DR programmes in the state.

DR programmes enable energy consumers to manage their consumption in an energy efficient and cost-effective way. The bill is also aimed to help the Californian state to meet its growing electricity needs.

The Public Utilities Commission now can consider demand response management in planning how to balance and ensure reliability for the state's power grid. Currently, DR programmes are administered by California’s three regulated investor-owned utilities: Pacific Gas & Electric, Southern California Edison and San Diego Gas & Electric. The utilities also rely on third-party operators to enroll customers in certain DR programmes.

"Demand response programs will not only enable Californians to get rebates in exchange for reducing their electricity use during times of peak energy demand, but will reduce the need for costly and polluting power plants that run only when there is peak demand for electricity,” said Senator Lois Wolk, author of the bill.

"As California continues to modernize its power grid and grow its economy, EDF hopes to see the rest of the nation follow suit to advance the innovative technologies needed to create cleaner, more efficient, and more affordable power," said EDF attorney and California senior manager Lauren Navarro-Treichler.

Power supplier EDF was lobbying for bill 1414 and emphasised the need to build a more resilient low-carbon electricity system.

Eaton extends UPS range in India

Power management company Eaton has added an advanced uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system line to its UPS portfolio in India.

The UPS is designed for protection and support of critical industrial operations in heavy engineering and manufacturing. The UPS ranges from 15kVA to 80kVA.

According to Eaton, the system delivers an efficiency
of up to 98.5%. The 93E provides surge suppression for load, detects location of faults and is able to switch to double-conversion operation in less than 4ms.

Eaton’s UPS uses sensing circuitry and three-stage charging technique aiming to extend the service life of the UPS battery while optimising battery recharge time.

"Eaton's extended range of 93E UPS is an ideal solution for facilitating a lower total cost of ownership through a combination of energy efficiency and high reliability in extensive manufacturing and other mission-critical operations," said Syed Sajjadh Ali, managing director Eaton India.

The introduced range enhances compatibility by providing a 0.99 input power factor and less than 5% total harmonic distortion, thus eliminating interference with other critical equipment in the same network, the company said.

According to a recent research report, the Indian UPS market is expected to increase at a rate of around 11% from 2014 to 2018 due to the growth of industrial and commercial infrastructure in India.

Power-plant developer FuelCell Energy has added Christopher Sotos, senior vice president of strategy, mergers and acquisitions at power distributor NRG Energy, to its board of directors.

At US-based NRG Energy, Sotos is responsible for the development, execution and implementation of the company's business strategy across all platforms, retail and wholesale business models as well as smaller venture capital investments and strategic relationships.

He has over two decades of experience in corporate financial management and business strategy.

"His power generation industry experience and expertise in business strategy and financial management make him a valuable addition to the FuelCell Energy Board and the Company it serves," said Chip Bottone, chief executive officer at FuelCell Energy.

"FuelCell Energy provides one of the few clean distributed energy baseload solutions for customers. I look forward to actively contributing to the growth of FuelCell Energy and providing insight into fuel cell applications in the power markets,” said Sotos.

In August this year, NRG Energy bought $35m of FuelCell Energy shares and extended a $40m loan in order to enable FuelCell to invest in project development, project finance and working capital support. NRG Energu now owns 6% of the outstanding common stock of the Connecticut-based company.



 

Himoinsa supplies diesel gensets and lighting towers to Mongolia

Spanish OEM Himoinsa has provided diesel generators and lighting towers to a coal mine operated by Erdenes in the Gobi desert in Mongolia.

The three-phase gensets run on a stand-by application and feature a pre-heater system to ensure a promptly start at temperatures from -40°C in the winter as well as to over 35°C in the summer.

According to Himoinsa, the gensets deliver the rated power within 10s after utility failure and have an epoxy polyester powder finish to prevent corrosion.

The 9-metre high transportable lighting towers are aimed to run every night during the summer and 24/7 during the winter. “These lighting towers can operate for up to 70 hours non-stop, more than 7 nights without refueling," said Manuel Sánchez Bada, engineering manager at Himoinsa.

The equipment will operate at Erdenes’ coa lmine in the Ömnögovi province, which has 6.4 billion tonnes of coal and is divided into six sections. Five lighting towers and one genset from Himoinsaare currently  in operation at the extraction site.

The Spain-headquartered company recently supplied 25 diesel gensets and lighting towers to a BIOCOM-managed biofuel production plant in Cacuso, Angola.

Alstom Bharat Forge Power gets $164m order from NTPC for steam turbines

Alstom Bharat Forge Power (ABFP) has received a $164m worth order from NTPC (National Thermal Power Corporation) for its Indian coal power plant.

ABFP, a joint venture between Alstom and Bharat Forge, will supply three units of 660MW supercritical turbine islands NTPC’s coal power plant, located in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India.

The turbine islands use steam with very high temperatures and pressure, which results in an efficiency of more than 40% than conventional sub-critical coal-fired plants. According to Alstom, This means that a supercritical unit burns less coal and generates less emission per megawatt of power output.

The contract comprises of manufacturing, supply erection and commissioning of the turbines. The coal-based thermal power plant has a capacity of 440MW.

The turbines will be manufactured at ABFP’s new manufacturing facility at in Gujarat, India, which will be commissioned in October this year. The plant is aimed to have an annual capacity of 5,000MW.

ABFP was created to participate in the Indian market of turbines islands, including steam turbines, generators and heat exchangers.

NTPC is a central public sector undertaking owned by the Indian Ministry of Power.
