FG Wilson and its distributer Horizons Engineering has completed a US$1.5m power installation at Basra Sports City. The genset manufacturer is providing a combination of prime and back-up power to the giant Middle Eastern sports complex.

Horizons Engineering installed seven FG Wilson generator sets including one 2500 kVA / 11 kV generator set, two 800 kVA containerised units, two 750 kVA containerised units and two 400 kVA canopy units. These provide prime power to the entire 2.2m square meter complex until all construction work is complete, when they will provide back-up power.

The 65 000 capacity stadium that cost US$800m to build will host the 2015 Gulf Cup of Nations. The complex includes hotels, restaurants and a fire station.

Horizons Engineering has been FG Wilson’s dealer and distributor for Jordan and Iraq since 1999. It has become the preferred supplier for another two sports complexes in Iraq.

Aggreko has entered a four-year deal with Cirque de Soleil to provide power and temperature control for the show on tour.

Cirque de Soleil has five touring shows that travel across the USA, Canada, Central and South America, Europe and Asia. Aggreko will need to provide machinery that can operate in the extreme weathers presented on all continents.

The power for each show must be uninterruptible and independent from the local electricity grid. Aggreko has provided power to many entertainment events worldwide including the 2012 London Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Temporary power deployed in Philippines

167 generators have been allocated for the worst affected areas

Following the super typhoon Haiyan that has devastated the Philippines temporary power units have begun to be deployed as prime power may not be restored for up to two months.

The Philippine Department of Energy has allocated 167 gensets for areas worst affected by the storm. The initial deployment included two generators to medical facilities and 30 to Roxas City, Capiz.

The gensets will provide between two and three kVA and will be transported by the armed forces to areas of need.

The National Grid Corp of the Philippines (NGCP) has said power will not be fully restored in typhoon-battered areas for another six weeks.

The storm and consequential flooding have damaged much of the electricity network infrastructure, including transmission towers and substations. NGCP has dispatched 34 crews of contractors and linemen to restore the network.

Cummins Power Generation introduces first Tier 4 gensets for mobile rental market

Cummins has brought out mobile generator units that are the first in the industry to comply with Tier 4 final emissions levels without using a diesel particle filter (DPF).

The units, ranging from 150 kW to 275 kW, will be available from 2014. They are among the first required to comply with the emissions regulations for 175 to 751 HP.

The Tier 4 Final regulations limit mobile generator set emissions to 0.4 grams per kWh of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and 0.02 grams per kWh of particulate matter - soot. This is a 90% reduction on the previous regulations introduced in 2005.

Cummins made improvements to its in-cylinder engine, exhaust gas recirculation and selective catalytic reduction exhaust after treatment.

The efficiency of the in-cylinder combustion engine means no DPF is required.

"By avoiding the need for a DPF, we were able to simplify the after treatment package with benefits of lower maintenance for rental operators. An added advantage to in-cylinder combustion improvement is reduced fuel consumption for end users," said Santhosh Sorab, marketing manager for Tier4 Final Product Development of Cummins Power Generation.

The first Tier 4 Final generator sets for the rental market from Cummins Power Generation will be the C150D2R generator set, standby rated at 150 kW, and the C200D2R generator set, standby rated at 200 kW. Both units will be available for delivery by Q3 2014. The C275D2R generator set, standby rated at 275 kW, is scheduled to be available beginning in Q4, 2014.

The Tier 4 Final certified mobile generators will feature switchable 60/50Hz dual frequency operation with multiple voltage configurations of 208V, 240V and 480V in three-phase, and 240V in single-phase. The units will also feature the new PowerCommand 3.3 controller (PCC) with both paralleling and advanced master-less load demand capabilities.

The packaged generators will also include a diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) tank and monitoring unit that controls the dispensing of DEF into the SCR to cut emissions of NOx. The normal consumption of DEF is less than 4 percent of fuel consumption, and the DEF reservoir and the fuel tank are sized appropriately to ensure uninterrupted 24-hour runtime.

Cooper Corporation exports first order to Ukraine

Cooper Corporation has completed the export of the first batch of Cooper Ecopack diesel gensets to Ukraine as part of a long-term supply contract.

The contract includes the supply of all power ratings Cooper Gensets from 15KVA to 180 KVA for sale in the eastern European country.

The varied and challenging climate in Ukraine means generator sets can experience problems starting and operating in extremely low temperatures. Cooper is offering a cold start kit as an add-on to allow operation at all times.

The gensets will also be available in Ukrainian output voltages and meet European customer requirements.

General Electric has launched a turnkey power system module that can be used to expand existing data centres or to provide new and temporary capacity to companies requiring data centre services.

The PowerMOD can be configured with a range of electrical components including automatic transfer switches, switchboards, UPSs and transformers.

The modular containers are available to provide between 200kW to 1500kW back up power and can be commissioned within five months. GE believes this quick deployment will appeal to customers requiring a faster solution than a traditionally built data centre, as well as offering capital savings.

The PowerMOD unit can be cooled with free cooling (via an economiser), direct expansion, chilled water or evaporative cooling.

The Webasto system allows work to continue at extreme cold temperatures

Doosan Portable Power has developed a range of technologies that allow engines to operate in extreme cold temperatures. The Webasto engine pre-heat system will be available as an optional extra with all Doosan generators.

The system, which can be integrated to any engine, includes a fuel operated coolant heater that can be remotely operated with a timer that controls the engine pre-heating system that can be programmed for seven days.

The timer feature will improve on-site productivity by having engines warmed and ready to provide power at a designated time. This  reduces fuel consumption and engine wear in waiting for the machine to start up.

Another feature of the pre-heat system is the Arctic Fox fuel warmer that prevents diesel from gelling in very cold temperatures and will allow any Doosan generator to be used efficiently on very cold sites.

Xtreme Power has expanded its lithium-ion battery energy storage systems on the Hawaiian island of Kauai with the addition of 2MW of power installed on at 12MW.

This is the eighth energy storage system Xtreme Power has installed in Hawaii including an existing 4.5MW system in operation in Kauai.

The energy storage is installed concurrently with 12MW photovoltaic system. The batteries will provide ramp rate control and fast frequency response and lessen the island’s reliance on diesel fuel.

The project is due for commissioning in May 2014.
