Four US energy firms have planned an $8 billion wind storage project that includes a 1.2GW compressed air storage system.

The companies, Pathfinder Renewable Wind Energy, Magnum Energy, Dresser-Rand and Duke-American Transmission, plan to construct a 2.1GW wind farm in Wyoming to bring power to Los Angeles in California. High voltage lines would send the electricity to a salt-cavern compressed air site in Utah and then be released at times of peak demand in the Los Angeles area.

An ambitious 268MW compressed air energy storage (CAES) project in Northern Ireland could be online by mid-2018, according to developer Gaelectric.

Wind energy developer Gaelectric wants to build the approximately £300m ($491m) CAES project on the outskirts of the Northern Ireland port of Larne. The project would require the development of three 230,000 m3 salt caverns to store compressed air and provide up to six hours of energy for peak-time use.

Power generation and storage at Mexican casinos from Scuderi

A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed for a power generation and energy storage project in Mexico City. The deal between AHIS, a developer and gaming company, and engine makers Scuderi Group sees Scuderi providing five gas-powered Split Cycle Engines for power generation and energy storage at five of its sites in southern Mexico.

The Scuderi Split-Cycle design allows the kinetic energy stored in the form of compressed air to be mixed directly with the energy stored in the fuel creating a more powerful and efficient way of producing electricity. The storage systems uses a unique combustion process that means the compressed air storage tanks require far less space than conventional compressed air energy storage systems. It combines high-pressure compressed air with the kinetic energy of the fuel to create a significant efficiency gain.

According to the agreement, Scuderi Group will build power generation and energy storage units to be installed at five AHIS casinos and, in line with local law, sell electricity back to the grid. Mexican law mandates that any private sources of power generation must sell equal amount to the regional grid. This is the first time Scuderi Group will be generating electricity for the Mexican grid.

US-Irish alliance for compressed air energy storage across Europe

Irish renewable energy firm, Gaelectric, has joined forces with Dresser-Rand, a US engineering group to implement compressed air energy storage (CAES) projects across Europe – starting in Northern Ireland.

The initial project will be the most advanced European CAES in Europe comprising 268MW twin power train storage and electricity generation facility that is due for commissioning in 2017. The project is expected to require £300m (US$477m) investment.

Dresser-Rand will project manage as well as overseeing scheduling and technical support services to include front end engineering and design in 2014 at the Larne, County Antrim site.

The compressed air system stores energy in the form of compressed air in caverns created within geological salt layers located typically at depths of between 450m and 850m beneath the Earth’s surface.

Energy is stored by compressing air during periods of low energy demand utilising compressor technology located at ground level. This stored energy is then available for use in subsequent periods of higher energy demand when it can be released and applied in generating power using significantly lower amounts of natural gas to generate peak time electricity.
