Market forecasters predict a surge in the UPS market following revelations the industry loses around €150billion in Europe, and the U.S €188 billion due to power failures.

According to Frost & Sullivan’s analysis, mature American and European markets will make up 45% of the UPS market revenues by 2018, while the Asia-Pacific will contribute 26% of the revenue.

Analysis of the global industrial UPS market reveals market earned revenues for 2014 at $1.13 billion, and estimates that this will reach $1.38 billion in 2018.

However, the market researchers also point out that the replacement rate for industrial UPS systems is fairly low, as they are built to last 20-30 years, the replacement demand will remain low globally and decrease the market revenue.

"Manufacturers need to introduce energy-efficient UPS systems with additional features," said Frost & Sullivan Energy & Environmental Senior Industry Analyst Gautham Gnanajothi. "They should also enhance their customisation capabilities to strengthen their appeal to customers in various market segments."

Active Energy Solution has announced its latest lithium-ion UPS system has been granted certification from international safety science company UL.

The company, a division of Methode Electronics, will now launch the AC6000 which allows users to “peak shave” the power supply – drawing power from the battery when the demand is high and re-charging at a non-peak times.

The line-interactive AC6000 operates with an input and output of 208 V or 240 V AC, and is capable of supplying 6000W of power for up to seven minutes.

The system also allows users to “peak shave” the power supply – drawing power from the battery when the demand is high and re-charge it at a non-peak time.

Power systems provider AEG Power Solutions has introduced a new remote monitoring system for UPS units.

The MoniUPS system is built on an Internet of Things (IoT) platform [where units are equipped with unique identifiers, allowing them to transfer data without human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction] and cloud technology. It can monitor any UPS regardless of age or brand as long as it contains an SNMP-Ethernet card.

The UPS unit sends data straight to the MoniUPS gateway that can provide information in real-time, as well as assemble periodic reports and identify system errors.

MoniUPS uses the Microsoft Azure cloud platform to store data.

Power management company Eaton has added an advanced uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system line to its UPS portfolio in India.

The UPS is designed for protection and support of critical industrial operations in heavy engineering and manufacturing. The UPS ranges from 15kVA to 80kVA.

According to Eaton, the system delivers an efficiency
of up to 98.5%. The 93E provides surge suppression for load, detects location of faults and is able to switch to double-conversion operation in less than 4ms.

Eaton’s UPS uses sensing circuitry and three-stage charging technique aiming to extend the service life of the UPS battery while optimising battery recharge time.

"Eaton's extended range of 93E UPS is an ideal solution for facilitating a lower total cost of ownership through a combination of energy efficiency and high reliability in extensive manufacturing and other mission-critical operations," said Syed Sajjadh Ali, managing director Eaton India.

The introduced range enhances compatibility by providing a 0.99 input power factor and less than 5% total harmonic distortion, thus eliminating interference with other critical equipment in the same network, the company said.

According to a recent research report, the Indian UPS market is expected to increase at a rate of around 11% from 2014 to 2018 due to the growth of industrial and commercial infrastructure in India.

Emerson Network Power (Emerson) has secured a deal with Perth-based distributor UPS West to sell the company’s uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) and thermal management solutions in Australia.

UPS West will offer Emnerson’s AC UPS Liebert NXC, Liebert GXT3 and the Liebert DM thermal management solution. The Australian company will also have access to trainings and technical resources of Emerson.

Emerson aims to make the company’s solutions more available to a wider marketplace.

According to UPS West, there is a gap in the supply of power and thermal data room solutions in small to medium sized businesses in metro and regional Western Australia.

"As we operate in the datacentre industry, we have found a need for the Liebert DM for small rooms in major buildings in the central business district as well as in regional sites,” said UPS West business development manager Ian Hart.

“UPS West is fast establishing a foot hold in the WA market by offering customers industry leading IT infrastructure and management solutions and we look forward to working with them as a valued addition to Emerson’s growing network,” said Emerson director of national sales Robert Linsdell.

This summer, Emerson appointed Bangladeshi company Computer Source as its distributor for UPS in the growing IT market of Bangladesh.
