AEG reveals lead-acid ESS project in Spain

Electronic systems provider AEG (AEG) working alongside Spanish utility Iberdrola and European research foundation Tecnalia, has delivered a lead-acid battery energy storage system (ESS) located at Iberdrola’s substation in Vitoria, Spain.

The grid-connected system designed for peak shaving times. The ESS is designed to have an energy capacity of 0.6MWh and allow the utility to monitor the grid load as well as to integrate the locally generated wind power.

Irizar introduces sodium-nickel battery-powered electric bus

Spain's Irizar Group has launched a sodium-nickel battery-powered electric city bus to be used in San Sebastian, Spain.

The 99% recyclable sodium-nickel battery pack has a capacity of 376kWh. The electric bus i2e is designed to have a range of up to 250 kilometres (155 miles) with a single charge. According to Irizar, five hours of charging guarantee 14h to 16h of driving with an average speed of 17km/h in city traffic.

Win Inertia integrates Maxwell ultracaps in energy recuperation system for Spanish rail

Power electronics firm Win Inertia has incorporated Maxwell Technologies’s ultracapacitors in its energy recuperation system at an electric rail system in Cerro Negro, Spain.

The braking energy recuperation system comprises Win Inertia's hybrid control technology that integrates batteries and Maxwell Technologies ultracapacitors to increase energy recovery efficiency and reduce stress on the batteries as well as extending the battery service life by 20% to 25%.
