French Saft Groupe’s newest Ni-Cd ultra low maintenance battery for aircrafts has passed in-flight tests.

Saft’s 435CH6 ULM is a 24V, 43 Ah battery designed to be the airplane’s main power source alongside standby and auxiliary functions.

Battery supplier Saft’s emergence as a key player in Asia’s trainset market continues at full steam after the French firm signed two deals to provide nickel-cadmium batteries.

The first deal to provide 156 SRM+ rail batteries was awarded by CNR Changchun, China’s state-owned rolling stock manufacturer.

Airbus will bring back lithium-ion batteries to its A350-900 from 2016 after removing the more advanced power sources from early production jets following defects on models used in Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner.

The European aircraft manufacturer will switch back from nickel-cadmium batteries picked for the earlier planes. Airbus initially designed the A350 to use advanced lithium batteries, which are lighter than nickel-cadmium.
