Maxwell Technologies has unveiled its 24-volt ultracapacitor-based Engine Start Module (ESM) for cranking vehicle engines.

The product, used alongside lead-acid batteries, doubles the voltage of the San Diego based firm’s previous ESM and adds to its Engine Starting Solutions line.

Ultracapacitor maker Maxwell Technologies (Maxwell) has introduced an enhanced 48V ultracapacitor module product, which includes the firms’ DuraBlue new shock and vibration cell technology.

The module is designed for mass transportation such as the integration in hybrid bus propulsion systems or rail stabilisation systems.

According to the California-based company, the module combines Maxwell’s solvent-free dry electrode formation and manufacturing process with a patent-pending cell structure design, which results in an increase in vibration immunity of 300% and in shock immunity of 400% compared to competitive offerings.

The product also comprises of a capacitor management options system for reliability and safety including a redundant over-voltage alarm.

“Ultracapacitors’ rapid charge and discharge characteristics, long operating lifetime, wide operational temperature range and ruggedness make them an ideal energy storage solution for hybrid buses and other vehicles that employ braking energy recuperation systems,” said Franz Fink, Maxwell’s president and CEO.

The module has been validated through several months of sampling with selected customers.

In November, the United States Advanced Battery Consortium selected Maxwell to research the technological and economic feasibility of a 12V hybrid energy storage system consisting of lithium-ion batteries and the company’s ultracapacitors.

The United States Advanced Battery Consortium (USABC) has selected ultracapacitor maker Maxwell Technologies (Maxwell) to develop an ultracapacitor/li-ion battery for stop-start vehicles.

The USABC, a subsidiary of the United States Council for Automotive Research, will grant Maxwell $2.68m. The contract is part of a 19-month cost-sharing programme in which the California-based ultracapacitor firm will provide 51%. The award is co-funded by the US Department of Energy.

California’s ultracapacitor firm Maxwell Technologies (Maxwell) and New York-based glass and ceramic material manufacturer Corning have teamed up for ultracapacitor-based energy storage development.

The partnership aims to research energy density, lifetime, operating environment, form factor and cost of ultracapactiors.

Power electronics firm Win Inertia has incorporated Maxwell Technologies’s ultracapacitors in its energy recuperation system at an electric rail system in Cerro Negro, Spain.

The braking energy recuperation system comprises Win Inertia's hybrid control technology that integrates batteries and Maxwell Technologies ultracapacitors to increase energy recovery efficiency and reduce stress on the batteries as well as extending the battery service life by 20% to 25%.

Celadon, Maxwell Technologies partner to deploy ultracaps in remote controls for set top boxes

Maxwell Technologies is working with remote control manufacturer Celadon to provide its 10-farad (F) HC series ultracapacitors.

The ultracapacitors will be used with the CLS-140 Cellular Media Center from set top box developer Cobalt Labs. These set top boxes are used by telecom companies including Orange.

Each remote control has a USB port that is plugged into the set top box to charge the ultracapacitors through AC wall power. Maxwell claims the ultracaps can deliver a quick 70 to 80% charge to the remote control within four to five minutes.

Michael Griswold, vice president of sales and business development at Celadon, said, "Ultracapacitors, as an alternative to traditional alkaline batteries, are a compelling solution for remote controls, as well as many different types of handheld devices.”
