Manz secures $47m in battery deals

Germany-based high-tech manufacturer Manz has received multiple orders from European and Asian companies for lithium-ion battery machinery this month that are worth $47m (€40m) in total.

The orders comprise of lithium-ion batteries production line solutions for electronic devices. Details of the deals remain undisclosed.

Germany’s Manz has developed a laser welding technique to improve the reliability of welded contacts in lithium-ion battery production.

Welded contacts between a battery's individual cells are cheaper and more reliable than screw-on contacts or bimetallic busbars. However, welding surge arrester contacts made of aluminum and copper is technologically demanding, because the resulting weld seam becomes more brittle the more the two differing metals mix.

German-based high-tech manufacturer Manz received its largest single order of li-ion battery machinery comprising a fully integrated production line in the “lower double-digit million Euro range”, revealed the company.

Manz’s li-ion battery technology will be integrated in consumer electronics such as notebooks and smartphones. “Like most of the orders in this segment today, the products are likely to be delivered to Asia”, said Axel Bartmann, head of corporate communications at Manz to BEST.

Germany may be worried that it does not have the lithium-ion cell making business it thinks it so desperately needs but when it comes to lithium-ion tool making, its machine makers may yet give the Asians a run for their money.

Marco Stehr of Manz AG, showed the latest ideas in lithium electrode slitting in Stuttgart this week— not using blades but laser technology at the World of Energy Solutions exhibition.
