A programme to protect lead mining, smelting, refining and recycling employees from exposure was a success, claim the International Lead Association (ILA).

ILA member companies in Europe, North America and Australia have now agreed to hit voluntary employee lead blood level targets of below 30 microgrammes per deciliter (µg/dl) by 2017.

When it comes to batteries behaving badly, its usually lithium-ion that gets the bad press. But a small event in a small American town shows that lead-acid can be just as dangerous.

18 workers at electronics manufacturer Cascade Systems in Hillsboro, Oregon, US, needed medical assistance after inhaling toxic fumes of overheated lead-acid batteries.

Recent life cycle analysis (LCA) studies have examined that lead-based products demonstrate sustainability credentials and show environmental benefits.

Three studies, commissioned by the International Lead Association (ILA), researched the environmental impact of lead-acid based batteries and architectural lead sheet. The “cradle to grave” studies covered the mining and extraction of raw materials, fabrication, use and disposal as well as energy and transportation considerations.

Global lead demand on the up

Global consumption of lead-acid batteries is leading to an increased demand for lead. A study by the International Lead Zinc Study Group (ILZSG) suggests that lead demand will increase 5% for the year 2013 and a further 4.6% in 2014.
