Areva and Schneider Electric partner for flow battery storage

France’s nuclear and renewables company Areva and critical power supplier Schneider Electric have teamed up for the development of a flow battery storage solution.

The project, funded by the European Union, is aimed to optimise an existing 50kW flow battery prototype made by EnStorage to a 150kW demonstration module. The new energy storage solution will be designed to generate and store electricity from renewable energy by combining hydrobromic acid and hydrogen.

The sales of fuel cell hydrogen vehicles will dominate sales of battery EVs, according to the director of Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (ISE).

Professor Eicke Weber told the World of Energy Solutions conference in Stuttgart, Germany, battery-powered vehicles will still play an important role in the e-mobility sector, but hydrogen cars will have the larger sales in the future.

Fuel cell developer Altergy settles dispute with Enersys

Hydrogen fuel cell developer Altergy Systems has settled a dispute with lead-acid battery maker Enersys, which resolves the outstanding legal challenges tied to an arbitrational panel award issued in May.

On May 13, 2014, the American Arbitration Association issued a $58m award in Altergy’s favour over claims Enersys had tortiously interfered with the sales of its products.

FuelCell Energy receives US DOE grant for distributed hydrogen production

US Department of Energy (DOE) has awarded FuelCell Energy with a $900,000 grant to produce a system of distributed hydrogen production.

FuelCell will develop an electrochemical reactor using the company’s commercial carbonate fuel cell stacks to produce a distributed hydrogen generation method. The new system shall allow hydrogen to be generated more efficiently where it is needed rather than on a large scale at a central plant. According to the company, distributed hydrogen generation would reduce transportation costs and provide reliable fuel supply.

The grant is part of a $20m support to advance hydrogen production and delivery technologies.

"Developing technologies that can economically produce and deliver hydrogen to power fuel cells from diverse, domestic and renewable resources can enable substantial reductions in energy use and carbon emissions," federal energy officials said.

“This award from the U.S. Department of Energy will get the R&D started on this concept, which could be an attractive approach to generate hydrogen in a low or carbon-neutral manner," said Anthony Leo, vice president of FuelCell. Using direct fuel stacks makes the stationary fuel cell power plant versatile, claimed Leo.

The manufacturer recently completed an installation of a 14.9MW fuel cell park in Bridgeport, US, owned by Dominion Corporate.

AFC Energy proclaims fuel cell electrodes breakthrough

UK hydrogen fuel cell developer AFC Energy is celebrating after extending the longevity of its electrodes to more than six months of continuous operation.

Electrodes are the critical components of a fuel cell, which enable the electrochemical reactions to occur between hydrogen and oxygen (from air) to generate electricity, heat and water. Laboratory trials of electrodes are on-going and further field trials of improved electrodes are scheduled to begin early next month.

At six months longevity, these applications have the potential to generate significant revenues for AFC Energy whilst also opening up new commercial opportunities in additional territories such as Germany, where the company is already carrying out long-term longevity trials with Akzo Nobel, one of the world's largest chemicals groups.

Ian Williamson, CEO of AFC Energy, said: "Our progress will surprise and challenge the power generating industry and we have recently filed six new families of patents to secure our rights. We look forward to pushing electrode life towards 12 months and beyond where we believe we will have a product that is economic globally in all target markets."
