Caterpillar (CAT) Marine has secured a deal with Brazilian operator Assessoria Transporte Aquaviaro to power fast ferries for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.

CAT Marine will supply 28 generator sets for seven aluminum-hull fast ferries. The 14 Cat 3512 with dynamic gas blending (DGB) and 14 Cat 9 gensets are designed to ensure prime and auxiliary power. Each 3512 generator provides 550eKW at 60Hz of rated power.

The ferries will feature diesel electric propulsion with azimuth thrusters and identical engine rooms. One ferry will be equipped with the Cat Marine dual fuel solution and powered by compressed natural gas. The remaining six ferries will be built with the option to retrofit the engine room to include dynamic gas blending kits.

“We’re pleased to unveil our first Cat Marine 3500 dual fuel solutions with Dynamic Gas Blending for such a significant global event,” said Chris Chenette, CAT Marine product value manager.

According to CAT Marine, the 3512 DGB generator set features a low-pressure gas system with an approximately 70% maximum gas substitution rate across a wide load range.

“The new Cat Marine dual fuel solution leverages the proven durability of the 3500 diesel engine while offering customers enhanced fuel flexibility and power redundancy to run diesel or gas,” said Jason Spear, CAT Marine product definition engineer.

DBR to supply gas genset to offshore gas platform

Dutch critical power supplier DBR is to deliver a gas genset to GDF Suez E&P Nederland’s offshore gas platform E17a-A located in the North Sea.

The 275kVA genset comprises of a gas powered MAN engine and a Leroy Somer air-to-air cooled generator. The system is designed to operate for 1,200 hours between maintenance intervals, according to DBR.

Due to limited space on the manned gas platform, DBR customised the genset design. “By placing the air cooling unit outside the engine room and reducing heavy components to a minimum we have come up with an efficient design that meets our client’s requirements,” said DBR sales manager Henri Hafkamp. The genset uses a single instead of a double frame and is manufactured with robust components to decrease risks of vibration.

The delivery is set for the end of 2014.

DBR recently struck a deal to supply emergency/harbour diesel gensets for six new pipelaying vessels from IHC Merwede.

GDF Suez E&P Nederland has 34 gas producing platforms and an annual gas production of 6 billion Nm3.

Cummins unveils quiet gensets for lightweight market

Cummins has brought out a range of generator sets suitable for home or business applications that run on both liquid propane and natural gas. The QuietConnect has power output ratings from 22kW to 60kW.

These are Cummins first gensets for the light commercial or residential markets. Although based on previous Cummins products, the emphasis was on making the gensets extremely quiet.

The QuietConnect operates very quietly thanks to advanced sound attenuation design and acoustical testing. This was done by eliminating external noises and pinpointing where in a generator noise was made so engineers could design quieter products.

The Connect Series generators are powered by the QSJ2.4 engine, a four-cycle, spark-ignited engine has a closed-loop electronic fuel system and have been designed and tested to perform under extreme temperatures and high altitude applications.

Brazilian genset market grows thanks to unreliable grid

The Brazilian electricity grid has been named as the reason for high genset sales for prime and standby power in the country. The country’s electricity generation network includes a high share of hydropower, which can be unreliable during droughts. This has caused high usage of gensets for critical applications including data centres, healthcare and financial services.

According to figures from Frost & Sullivan’s ‘Analysis of the Brazilian Genset Market’ paper, the genset market will be worth US$1472m in 2017.

As the country’s economy continues to grow, power demands from the oil and gas, construction, manufacturing and entertainment industries are outstripping electricity supply, and in turn boosting genset sales.

Gustavo Stainoh, Frost & Sullivan energy and power research analyst said: "The need to handle blackouts spurs the uptake of gensets. During peak hours, however, companies find it more feasible to get electricity from the grid due to the recent reduction in industrial electricity tariffs."

The paper says cheaper products from Asian manufacturers has affected market profits and a lack of regulation and certification of equipment makes a challenging environment for manufacturers.

Cummins is targeting the European rental market with the launch of four generator sets in the 150 to 300 kVA range.

According to International Rental News, the rental-specific sets, which have been created by a new Cummins design team led by former A-Plant power rentals director Richard Mellard, are sized at 150, 200, 250 and 300 kVA, with the smaller two using Cummins QSB7 engine and the two larger models equipped with the QSL9 power unit

The sets will be made available in markets including Europe, the Middle East, Asia Pacific and Australia. The reports said Cummins would further expand their rental range, with launches of sub-150 kVA units by the end of 2013 or the start of 2014, and larger units following in 2014/15.

The gensets come equipped with Cummins’ PowerCommand controllers, although Cummins plans to offer third-party controllers for rental companies who want commonality across their fleets. The 150 kVA unit can be used in temperatures up to 500C without any derating and the 200/250/300 sets up to 400C with no derating.
