American Vanadium gets first flow battery ESS order

Canada-based energy storage developer American Vanadium has received an order for the company’s vanadium redox flow battery energy storage system (ESS) CellCube.

Renewables company Newfound Energies contracted American Vanadium to deploy two 30kW to 130kWh CellCube ESS for the integration into a remote microgrid fuel and logistics centre.

Giorno currently works as CEO and president for Total Gas & Power New Energies USA. He joined the company 1975 and has held numerous, international management positions within the Total group.

RedFlow completes trials of flow battery ESS

Australia’s battery maker RedFlow has completed trials of a large-scale energy storage system (ESS) with its zinc-bromine flow batteries.

The company charged and discharged 48 batteries in four strings, producing 50V to 720V on a DC bus coupled and tested on a 14kW inverter connected to the grid.

Australia’s flow battery maker RedFlow has signed a non-exclusive supply agreement with Austrian-based energy storage developer BlueSky Energy.

The agreement also gives RedFlow a presence in Europe with provided office space from BlueSky Energy in Austria.

US aerospace firm Lockheed Martin has acquired assets from flow battery energy storage firm Sun Catalytix.

Sun Catalytix, an MIT spinout startup, will become a wholly-owned subsidiary and operate under the name of Lockheed Martin Advanced Energy Storage in the future. 25 employees along with patents and the company’s business plan will become part of Lockheed Martin. The financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

Flow battery-powered EV gets German road approval

German testing centre TÜV Süd has certified Liechtenstein nanoFLOWCELL’s (NFC) EV for use on public roads in Europe.

The “QUANT e-Sportlimousine” comprises a flow battery and two supercapacitors providing a driving range of up to 600km and a continuous output of 30kW, according to the company. The car is designed to have a consumption of 20kWh/100km and acceleration from 0-100 in 2.8sec.

ViZn seeks $25m for battery storage

American-based flow battery developer ViZn Energy is to seek $25m to expand its manufacturing capacity.

The company told Bloomberg it expects to increase its zinc-iron flow battery production during the next six months. $25m should be “enough” to get the ViZn fully funded. “We’ll be on our way to just pure execution until we’re cash-flow positive,” said ViZn’s chief executive Ron Van Dell.

ViZn Energy, flow battery developer based in Montana US, has installed a 160kWh zinc flow battery for grid storage at Flathead Electric Cooperative’s Kalispell, Montana site.

The zinc flow battery will be used to demonstrate grid-tied services such as peak shaving, frequency regulation, load shifting, backup power, and the potential for black start capabilities, and evaluate the benefits of using battery storage for the end user.

Redflow and Flextronics to manufacture flow batteries

Redflow, the Australian developer of zinc-bromine flow batteries, has named Flextronics as its manufacturing partner.

US-based Flextronics will be responsible for increasing production of the flow battery to get it to a commercial level for use in stationary storage markets.

Primus Power flow battery to be installed at US DoD airbase

Primus Power has won a contract to supply a 250kW 1MWh zinc-bromine flow battery to a Department of Defense Marine Corps Air Station in California. 

The project is part of the DoD’s Environmental Security Technology Certification Programme’s Zinc Bromide Flow Battery Installation for Islanding and Backup Power project.
