Energy storage mandated for renewable energy developments in Puerto Rico

Any renewable energy installation on the Latin American island of Puerto Rico must include storage, according to a new rule by a state-owned electricity supplier Autoridad de Energía Eléctrica (AEE). 

Puerto Rico’s Electric Power Authority (PREPA) and the AEE, which is the island’s sole utility provider, have stated for frequency regulating equipment there must be storage equal to 30% of the generating capacity and for ramping services it should be equal to 45%.

The island struggles with intermittent power from renewable sources being connected to the electricity grid— a problem this ruling will address.

The required storage levels of 30 and 45% mean the focus will be on high power options such as flywheels and supercapacitors rather than batteries and electrochemistry solutions.

Renewable energy developers are keen, with 64 already submitting plans that meet the technical requirements. AEE hopes 600MW of generating capacity will be built on the island, this would boost renewable generation on the island from 1% to 6%.

The US Electricity Storage Association has changed its name, leadership and website.

The new name is the Energy Storage Association.

The ESA also has a new executive director, Matthew Roberts, an energy policy expert, having previously led government and public affairs on behalf of trade association focussed on advanced transportation fuels. There is also a new-look website to tell people about the changes and promote the deployment of energy storage technologies.

OXIS Energy collaborates with Proinso for solar storage system

Oxis Energy is collaborating with Proinso to develop a prototype energy storage system to integrate with PV systems.

Proinso is a PV inverter and system supplier, it is working with the lithium-sulphur battery developer to create a storage system for commercial release later this year.

Global battery giant Enersys has acquired a family of battery companies based in Southeast Asia. UTS Holdings and its subsidiaries including Battery Power International and IE Technologies, based in Singapore, are suppliers of motive and reserve power for the Asian markets.

Xtreme Power installs lithium-ion batteries in Hawaii

Xtreme Power has expanded its lithium-ion battery energy storage systems on the Hawaiian island of Kauai with the addition of 2MW of power installed on at 12MW.

This is the eighth energy storage system Xtreme Power has installed in Hawaii including an existing 4.5MW system in operation in Kauai.

The energy storage is installed concurrently with 12MW photovoltaic system. The batteries will provide ramp rate control and fast frequency response and lessen the island’s reliance on diesel fuel.

The project is due for commissioning in May 2014.

AES commences operation of 40 MW lithium-ion storage facility in Ohio

AES Corporation has notched 100 MW of installed grid-scale storage with commercial operation of a 40 MW lithium-ion facility in Moraine, Ohio.

The project, at Dayton Power & Light’s Tait Generation Station, provides fast-response frequency regulation services to PJM Interconnection to help stabilize the power grid.

The 40-MW facility is the fifth facility by AES to run on its storage operating system, called sOS. The system is a fast-response control architecture that automates the operation of AES-delivered battery-based energy storage arrays.

The Tait battery array includes more than 800,000 battery cells and connects through the station’s transformers, operated by DP&L and DPL Energy LLC, through an independent agreement with PJM.

European Research Council grants Trinity College Dublin €150,000 for supercapacitor materials R&D

Ireland’s Trinity College Dublin (TCD) has won €150,000 ($203,000) funding from the European Research Council (ERC) for a one-year nanotechnology project to develop 2D-based nanomaterials for ultra-thin, flexible supercapacitors for energy storage.

Professor Valeria Nicolosi, a research professor at Trinity College Dublin (TCD), told the Irish Times that her project 'Ultrasonic spray deposition: Enabling new 2D based technologies' focuses on looking at the economic and technical feasibility of using one-atom-thick materials.  TCS will explore “liquid exfoliation” of atom-thick flakes of materials with useful properties.

According to some nanotechnologists, the key to supercapacitors' performance improvement is to use materials that have a high surface area are mechanically robust, strain-resistant, electrochemically stable and electronically conducting.

 “There are hundreds of materials that can form two-dimensional layers, and the behaviours of these ultra-thin materials means there could be the potential to build devices that charge and discharge thousands of times over and still retain the same efficiency,” she said.

“The advantage of this technique is that you can produce billions and billions of layers within hours, it doesn’t involve any heavy chemistry, it doesn’t involve particularly challenging protocols and yet it produces loads of these materials.

In all 33 scientists from 15 countries around the EU received €150,000 grants from the ERC, in its latest funding round for proof-of-concept projects.

Commerical solar energy storage sector poised for dramatic growth – analysts

The commercial sector of the solar energy storage market is projected to expand by a factor of 700 in the coming years and become the largest market segment in 2017, according to a report by analysts IHS.  

Global installations of photovoltaic (PV) storage systems for commercial use are set to rise to 2.3 GW in 2017, up from a mere 3.2 MW in 2012, according to the report entitled “The Role of Energy Storage in the PV Industry”.

This will increase the commercial segment’s share of PV installations to 40% in 2017, up from 5% in 2012.

Concerns about energy rates and grid reliability are prevalent in the North American commercial market. Consequently, North America is expected to lead the world in commercial PV storage, accounting for more than 40 percent of installations in 2017.

Another lucrative region for commercial PV energy storage is Japan, where electrical blackouts are common following the Fukushima nuclear disaster. Also on a fast growth track is Germany, where self-consumption of PV energy is becoming increasingly financially attractive.

Abigail Ward, PV analyst at HIS, said: “Installations in the commercial PV sector potentially can reach the point of payback much more quickly than those in the residential area. This will encourage many PV storage suppliers to enter the business in the coming years.”
