UK-based power provider Clarke Energy is to deliver five diesel engines to Nigerian company Lagos’ Flour Mills.

The diesel engines are designed to deliver up to 12.5MW of electrical power. The delivery is aimed to help the country’s energy distribution challenges and encourage the growing industrial sector.

Two of the engines will be used at the Kano facility in northern Nigeria, in order to maintain power for production. The General Electric engines will deliver 5 MW of baseload electrical power, with an expected capital payback in less than 12 months on diesel fuel cost savings. The other three engines will be installed at Flour Mills' headquarters in Lagos that already uses 11 of GE’s J620 gas engines. The diesel engines are aimed to provide backup power.

“As Nigeria continues to grow its industrial might in the global economy, we have opted to invest in General Electric’s new 616 diesel engines to deliver higher fuel efficiency at our sites in Lagos and Kano,” said Paul Gbededo, chief executive officer, Flour Mills of Nigeria.

“Our new 616 diesel engine is the first high-speed model for power generation, allowing us to serve customers with a wider reciprocating engine portfolio,” said Cory Nelson, general manager diesel engines of General Electric’s distributed power business.

Mexico’s Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) has commissioned MAN B&W to install a 12K80MC-S9 two-stroke low-speed diesel engine for stationary applications at a power plant in La Paz, Baja California Sur, Mexico.

It is the fifth two-stroke engine that MAN B&W is to deliver to the Baja California Sur plant. The four already installed engines have a current output of 172.5MW. According to the supplier, the new engine is set to have an output of 47.88MW, 5MW higher than the 12K80MC-S predecessor, while possessing a lower rate.

The 12K80MC-S9 will run on local, cost-effective fuel with a viscosity of around 1,200cSt at 50°C and 4.3% sulphur content like the four predecessors in order to meet the local environment regulations, claimed MAN B&W.

The commission is part of a contract for the extension of CFE’s diesel power plant, that Spanish contractor Acciona is awarded for. Doosan Engine, MAN Diesel & Turbo’s Korean license holder, will construct the new engine.

An installation of a bottoming cycle steam turbine and a high-pressure selective catalytic reduction (SCR) for emission control is also planned under the contract.

Mexico’s energy reform allows private investments in power generation and commercialisation, while private investors in power transmission and distribution have to associate with state-owned CFE. The government aims to prevent monopolistic practices with this regulation and remain strategic status for transmission and distribution.

MAN Diesel & Turbo has unveiled the 35/44G four-stroke diesel engine, also known as ‘Otto’, at its facility in Augsburg, Germany.

Otto MAN

The 35/44G is offered in a V-type version with 20 cylinders and an output of 10,600 kWm, (10,200 kWm). Its rated outputs – 530 kW per cylinder for 50 Hz power generation and 510 kW for 60 Hz power generation – give the 35/44G best-in-class power density among gas engines.

The newly-developed ‘Otto’ gas engine has an electrical efficiency of 47.2%, and is available for Combined Heat and Power (CHP) and/or jointly with a MAN steam turbine of the MARC series – in a combined cycle mode reaching high total plant efficiencies with low emissions.

It also features a single-stage turbocharger with variable turbine area (VTA) technology and many innovative technological elements. The spark-ignited unit, which is ideal for combined-cycle and combined-heat and power configuration with waste-heat utilisation, complies with all current emission limits solely by in-engine measures.

On track for a smaller more economical hybrid

A Japanese hybrid train company has made an engine 45% smaller and 20% more economical on fuel than conventional diesel locomotives.  Kinki Sharyo use a diesel engine combined with lithium-ion batteries.  Unlike diesel trains the hybrid only requires one engine for two locomotives making it lighter and more economical on fuel.
