The battery fire that led to the grounding of Boeing’s Dreamliner fleet last year was caused by inadequate design and testing, according to the final report by the US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).

The lithium-ion battery fire occurred on January 7, 2013 on a Japan Airlines 787 Dreamliner while the plane sat at Boston’s Logan International Airport.

UK-based Porvair Filtration (Porvair) has developed flame arrestor vents with super hydrophobic Vyon materials to safeguard potential explosions in lead-acid batteries.

According to Porvair, the super hydrophobic material is resistant to most acid, organic chemicals and temperatures up to 110ºC while offering chemical capability. They are designed to reduce the risk of acid spillage and to release excess gas from lead-acid batteries during operating cycles and prevent flame ingress into the battery.
