Bitrode launches IGBT lead-acid formation charger in North America

US-based battery charging and test equipment manufacturer Bitrode has introduced an insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) formation charger in North America.

The HD-CR/CD is designed for charging SLI batteries (flooded and VRLA/AGM), motive power batteries and industrial cells. It operates at 16KHz and allows users to achieve efficiency and power factors of up to 99%, according to Missouri-based Bitrode.

Organic battery technology can charge your phone in 30 seconds

An Israeli company has developed a battery made from organic materials that can charge a phone in 30 seconds and a laptop in minutes.

Startup StoreDot’s Flash Battery uses biological semiconductors, or ‘NanoDots’, made from naturally occurring organic compounds discovered during Alzheimer’s disease research at Tel Aviv University. The self-assembling NanoDots have high electrode capacitance and increased electrolyte performance.

Energy Star bows out of battery charging system standards

Energy Star, the US government-backed programme that promotes energy efficiency in products, has decided to withdraw its standards for battery charging systems from December 31, 2014.

The agency is withdrawing because it believes the standards set in California outstrip its own or the Department of Energy's and believe multiple sets of standards could cause confusion to companies and consumers.
